Cosy mysteries in overlooked places, and the art of growing older.

A star is born

Inspiration for new characters is all around, even if they start out annoying you.

Showing off my new jumper, never a good idea so close to cat Max.

Luckily, my newly knitted jumper survived Max’s sharp claws… I need to stay warm in our winter while writing the first in my new series Off on a bus… to Northern Italy.

I was searching for some more characters when the perfect sat next to me in the cinema last Saturday. We went to see a Dutch movie called Opa Kor that is about an alcoholic  grandfather who loses his grandson on the soccer field one day when he goes off to grab a beer or two in the cantine.

It might be hard to believe  this was a funny film, but it did have its moments. In those moments, my neighbour took a breather from laughing her horsey laugh, and took a moment to lift her naked feet — she had slipped off her socks as soon as she hit the chair —  and look at her lifted foot from all angles as if she was going to paint or sculpture them.

She sat down next to me at the very last minute in a near empty cinema. (Don’t you just hate that?) As she took off her socks, she told me: “If you are irritated with me sitting here, you can go sit on the other side of your partner. There is an empty chair.”

“No, thank you!” was my reply.

Opa Kor

All revenue of Opa Kor goes to the Sophia Kinderziekenhuis in Rotterdam. It’s the second film that the Rotterdam actor Martin  van Waardenberg has made about this figure Kor and he made the movie with a very low budget. All actors are famous Dutch people who took part for free and, in my opinion, make the film funny.

Back to my annoying neighbour in the cinema, she gets a star role in my new series, where she annoys someone else in a cinema, and we find out why she is so annoying. There is always a story, always.

Stragna Woman

If, in the meantime, you’d like to read about another strange woman with a story, my novella Wilma’s Tulip Field Days could be just the pick. It introduces us to Kitten Number Three and we find out how adventurous and brave she already is. But the story focuses on Stragna Woman, who is set on grabbing the tabby kitten from her idyllic hayloft. Why does she want to do that? What is her story?
