No, I won’t tell you what Hunter’s secret is, even though I know now. Even though my lips are burning, no way am I going to spoil it for you. What I will tell you is that this was my first read of Val Penny’s series about D.I. Hunter. A small spoiler alert; it won’t be my last.

Like old friends
Given that this is the fifth book in the series, it took a few chapters to get my bearings. That didn’t matter to me; I enjoyed figuring it out and it was easy because the book is written well. Only problem is: Now I want to read them all as I am curious about what happened to all the characters in the past. This book is especially about Hunter’s past.
What I liked about Hunter’s Secret was that although it was very exciting, it never got too gory for me. And I loved the characters and the way they interacted. As one of the reviewers says it’s like catching up with old friends. Even though this was the first time I met them, the frequent bantering and excellent descriptions of them all, helped getting to know them quite quickly. And although I am still not telling you Hunter’s secret, the parts leading up to what that was, were entertaining.
Edinburgh
My father was born in Stirling and although I was born in New Zealand, I have a soft spot for Scotland, all things Scottish and feel quite Scottish if that makes sense. I love Edinburgh as well so I adored the setting of this series. I could picture them in the pub in between haunts to the suspects and police station. I also liked following the detectives around the riverbank and on their various drives around town.
The best thing about this book is there is going to be a follow-up for Christmas. That would make a fab present. I am going to get the whole series!
